What has changed after global communications have expanded in China, America and Malaysia?
Global communication is a new word; but also a very common word in today’s world. What does global communication mean? In my point view, it is a kind of cooperation and exchange between different countries and between different races. In the past several years, the global communication has changed globalization a lot. In 21century, a new era in the human calendar, globalization is flooding almost every corner of the earth. And nowadays, we call the earth the global village. All the countries in the world have a tight relation between each other, no matter in what kind of fields. And due to the global communications, changes have been taking place in everywhere on earth over the years after global communications. The global communication has great impact on everyone. In this essay, I will mainly look into the changes in China, America and Malaysia.
In the 1990s, economic globalization has become the new trend to dominate development of world. Globalization has significant influences on the changes of the world’s political and economic structures. In essence, economic globalization is the globalization of market institution. No doubt, economic globalization has influenced the economy of China. China, in modern times, faces the problem of lacking water and has strength in the industry of manufactures. First, the problem of water is the one big issue that China must solve. Without globalization, China has two solutions to this problem, the first one is sea water desalinization and the other on is South to North Water Diversion Project. In my view, both of these two solutions are expensive. Also, in the long term, both of the solutions are not good for the economy of China. So it is the problem makes the Chinese government feel headache. Then, what is the solution? With the help of globalization, the solution is to guide the lake water in Lake Baikal which is located in Russia into the south part of China. In this way, the entire south part of China has enough water. At the same time, this solution also has positive effects on the global environmental issues. It says on world geography that there is almost 60 tons of high quantity nature mineral water annual flow into ocean without any benefits. Also, by the way of guiding water into China, there are some positive effects for the extremely cold weather condition which is not suitable for human to live in Siberia. Actually, it is to not cause waste and to cause positive effects on the global environmental issues. This solution achieves two aims at once.
On the other hand, in 1980s, China has strength in the industry of manufactures. By the end of 1978, China has its economic reform which is known as reform and open. This reform can be seen as the first time for China to get in touch with globalization. In 2001, China became a part of the Word Trade Organization (WTO). This is the signal of that China officially caught up with the globalization. In January of 2007, the economics of China has been integrated into the global economy. This is the process of China to realize globalization step by step. In the view of China’s export industrial structure, labor intensive products occupy the main part of the whole export products. It is imaginable how big the impact of China to the manufactures in developed countries is when China got touch with globalization. In 2005, the WTO cancelled the rule of limit quantity for Chinese textiles. Thus, Chinese textiles swarmed into the world market. This showed the power and energy of China’s economy to the world. China has become the biggest word’s manufacturing work. Plenty of cheap and fine products are sold to everywhere around the world. For this point, I have lots of personal experiences. More than 50% of products in the supermarkets are made in China. The newest iPhone: iPhone 4s is made in Shenzhen in China. As China exports so many cheap and fine products to the world market that China has cause the crowd out role to other countries’ manufacturing industries. In the adjustment process of optimize the global allocation of resources, different manufacturing industries from different countries will move to China. As China can produce cheaper and better products than other countries do. Once these cheap and fine products have been produced, the whole world shares these products. On this point, the globalization can promote China to innovate the development mode and also can increase the employments in China.
Along with these positive effects, globalization also has some side effects on China. First, the monopoly of technology and the holdings of direct investment by foreign companies have caused the threats to industrial Safety and industrial update. The privileges to foreign companies have restrained those local companies that share the same trade with foreign companies in a large degree. Even some markets of China have been monopolized by the foreign companies, such as the market of drinks, the market of mobile phones and the market of toothpastes. The second side effect might be the foreign debts. In recent few years, the foreign debts are growing at a high speed. This problem can have lots of potential dangers and we must pay attention to. The uncontrolled scale caused by too many foreign debts; the debt repayments caused by unsatisfactory usage of foreign debts; the shortage in monitoring foreign debts and all of these problem have showed us the potential dangers of foreign debts. Another side effect is the unreasonable structure of foreign trades in some areas with high presence of foreign companies. A lot of enterprises closed down in the financial tsunami in Pearl River Delta region and this has strongly proved the side effect of unreasonable structure of foreign trades. So we need to recognize and treat globalization comprehensively and correctly.
America, as one of the biggest and most developed country in the world, has a tight connection with globalization. Even for a long time, globalization also has effectively meant “Americanization”. In other word, others countries involve in globalization in the world adjust to American more. So, American had little to adjust to in globalization when it was the same as Americanization. One of the most obvious changes is that American companies have migrated most of their manufacturing jobs to foreign countries where it is cheaper to do business, for example, China is one of these countries. What is more? Service and technical jobs are currently operating a large exodus to foreign labors too. And this is what called outsourcing and offshoring. This phenomenon just like a double-edged sword, both have positive and negative effects. For positive effects, people in American can have the nice products with lower prices. Also, because of cheaper labors and cheaper resources, companies in American that have migrated most of their manufacturing jobs to foreign countries can earn more profits than before. But just as I said, this also has some negative effects. As American companies have migrated most of their manufacturing jobs to foreign countries and service and technical jobs are also operating a large exodus to foreign labor, there are fewer and fewer work positions for American people. This results in the low employment rates. As we all known, there is an inverse connection between employment rates and crime rates. As a result of that more and more people can’t find works to feed their families, they have no choice but to earn money in some illegal ways. Then the crime rate goes up, and this has caused a threat to the social security.
Globalization also has great impacts on education in America. Have you ever image that you or your family members to be tutored by someone in India? It is what happening nowadays. A 14-year-old student in Chicago is tutored in mathematics through the internet by an India tutor. And this tutor is from an India-based tutoring company. This just showed us the globalization in education. Globalization and global awareness have been important and necessary topics for today’s education. Just as some American educators said, the purpose of education is to develop good citizens and productive workers for the future. And the future of America is tightly connected with globalization, as the welfare of the United States is tied to the welfare of other countries by economics, the environment, politics, culture, information, and technology. Therefore, global perspective is one of the necessary curriculums in American schools. Actually, the global education in America is not a new idea. In 1970, an educational philosopher called Brameld formulated the basic principles of the Reconstructionist philosophy of education and which is called for a close relationship between education and culture to help identify and deal with the problems of society. . In the present interdependent world, problems must be shared on a global scale. And Brameld’s most important contribution to global education was the recognition of common purpose. Since then, educators from America have thought more globally and have encouraged their students to think globally. American students find themselves living in a global world; also the educators can’t ignore this factor. The educators have the duty to teach critical global issues that impact the world in class. In this way, students can easier adapt themselves into the global society.
Malaysia is a South Asian country which consist thirteen states. From Aug31, 1957 to 2010, the population of Malaysia had increased to about thirty million. The major components of its population are Chinese, Indian and Malaysian. It indicated that Malaysia is a multicultural country. Since the early immigrants are attracted by the fruitful natural resources and agricultural lands, it had already started its “globalization” process in some way. Malaysia joined the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), and further ratified the establishment of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on 6 September 1994 (to replace the GATT with effect from 1 January 1995) to show its commitment in accepting the challenges of globalization. By now, globalization has yielded lots of effects to Malaysia. Because of Malaysia’s independence, Malaysia has been one of the most globalized developing countries. And globalization has been claimed to be the major factor to Malaysia’s phenomenal economic development and growth. As Anwar Ibrahim once mentioned, "Globalization has done us a good service, particularly in the economic sphere, a sphere in which the table has been turned, with the denominator fearing the loss of his domination." In order to liberalize trade, Malaysia government offered the privilege of reducing tariffs on 79% of imports in 1992. Also, Malaysia government converted non-tariff measures into tariffs. As a result of these measures, Malaysia benefited from increased manufactured exports and increased the consumer welfare. Also these measures showed Malaysia’s index of trade liberalization decreasing and which indicated the increase in her economic liberalization year-by-year. What’s more? Malaysia also has taken some globalization steps in agricultural market to improve the access of the sector to markets for manufactured exports. One of these steps is to reduce most of the major agricultural products' tariffs by 35%.
On the other hand, globalization also has caused threats to Malaysia’s and other developing countries’ autonomy, both in economic and politic fields. Just as stated by the Mexican President, Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de Leon in the recently held World Economic Forum in Davos, "The motives for 'global phobia' had more to do with vested interests and fears of competition than any real altruism or concern for developing countries." Since then, globalization has been claimed to be a headache after the 1997-1998 crisis. Later, globalization also was claimed to result in the increase in income inequality and poverty within the country. And this will result in the collapse of the local small and medium-sized industries. Furthermore, the economic liberalization has indirectly made the economy gradually susceptible to the external shocks. Also because of economic liberalization, it became undermined the expansion of domestic industrial capacity and capability. Malaysia faced trading losses from RM 809 million in 1961 to RM 53,691 million in 1997 and this just showed that terms-of-trade has declined severely. Because of the increase in losses, Malaysia faced a decrease in the export purchasing power and Malaysia reduced the quantity of imports in to the country. And the WTO established the Trade-Related Investment Measures (TRIMs) and Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs) further deepened the disadvantage of Malaysia to developed countries. The establishment of both Trade-Related Investment Measures and Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights in some ways indirectly eliminated all most the entire investment conditions favoring domestic industries. And they only benefited transnational corporations' interest and leverage. At the same time, TRIPs also strengthened the monopolies of transnational corporations through some technologies. In this way, it increased the technology superiority of the developed nations and limited the transfers of technologies, which is harmful to the development of developing countries.
Globalization as I have described in this paper is a potent force that influences the economic, political, cultural, environmental, and technological systems for all the countries in the world. Based on all the three countries I have talked about, I have learned that globalization just like a double-edged sword; globalization can promote the developments of countries but it will also have some side effects along with the positive influences. So, we need to recognize and treat globalization comprehensively and correctly. And face the challenging of globalization bravely; try to build a better global village.

Global Communication
What is global communication and how has it promoted the globalization witnessed in the past ten years?
Global communication is a new word; but also a very common word in nowadays world.
The world just likes a village. In this village, not everyone is very rich. There are both rich and poor in this village. And the developed countries are the rich ones, the backward countries like the poor. So developed countries want to help those backward countries, they found organization to offer service and goods to the backward countries. World Health Organization is one of these organizations. Doctors from different countries come together and go to these countries with backward medical technologies. These doctors remedy locals for free and give the medicines for free. 2008, is a very hard year for China. An 8 magnitude earthquake attacked Wen Chuan in Si Chuan province. Lots of people lost their families and houses. China also has a great lost in economy. When the other country got the news, they set up relief teams immediately to help China rescue survivors in this earthquake. They also share the disaster by donate money to China. It is the influence of global communication, isn’t it? Also, the non-governmental organizations also play important roles nowadays. The most famous organization should be Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This foundation is the world’s largest charity foundation founded by Bill Gate and his wife Melinda Gates. This foundation donates money to promote the global equality in the field of health and education. Every year, this foundation will donate more than 1 billion US dollars to all over the world.
The global communication also has influenced the business field. The transnational enterprises have benefited a lot. Transnational enterprises are also known as multi-national enterprises. These enterprises engaged in foreign direct investment. Without global communication, these enterprises will have lot of troubles. Another evidence of the influence is outputs and exports. The whole world likes a big market. And each country plays the role of seller and buyer. And we call these trades exports and inputs. In USA, input is very common. When you go to the supermarket, 90% of all the good are input from other country. And because of output and exports, we can buy some items that are special in other countries. World Trade Organization is an international organization and is set up to manage the world economic and trade orders. Reciprocity, transparency, market access and fair competitions are some principles of World Trade Organization. If there is no global communication, then how could World Trade Organization exist?
Besides influence on economy, global communication has influence on politics as well. The United Nations is an organization is set up by sovereign states. 193 countries have joined in this organization. This organization is to maintain international peace and security. This organization can affect the countries’ politics definitely. Also, countries can make some global decision through this organization. Such as the United Nations passed a resolution; decided to set up the no-fly zones in Libya. Then each country should follow this resolution. There are also some other organizations have the similar functions, such as the G20, European Union, East Asia Summit and so on. All of these organizations are the result of global communication.
Due to the global communication, the world becomes smaller and smaller, and the relations between countries are tighter and tighter. Different cultures mingle with each other. And we are still improving the global communication and globalization. We have seen lot of advantages from global communications through lots of field. We will meet the wonderful tomorrow together.

The cuisine also reflects the multi-ethnic makeup of population in Malaysia. Lots of cultures have influenced the cuisine. Much of the influence comes from the Malay, Chinese, Indian, Thai, Javanese, and Sumatran cultures. The cuisine of Malaysia is very similar to the cuisine from Singapore, Brunei and Filipino. Also, cuisine in different states may be different. As the time goes by, food in other culture has been assimilated into Malaysia. A good example is some Chinese restaurants in Malaysia also serve with Malay cuisine.

T: Ha Tiingteck
H: Hi, my name is Huan. I am doing a research on your country. Would you like to give me an interview about your home country?
T: Yes, sure
H: Ok, thanks. First, what is your Malay name?
T: Ha Tiingteck.
H: Could you spell it to me? As you know it is different from English.
T: H-a T-i-i-n-g-t-e-c-k
H: Ok, got it. Where is your home town?
T: I am from Marang, a city near the South China Sea.
H: I learned that Malaysia has two parts, the east one and the west one, which part you’re your home town belongs to?
T: Oh, it belongs to the west part.
H: Ok, could you please tell me something about the education system of your country?
T: In Malaysia, we go to preschools. From 3-4 years old, we attend pre-school playgroups. Then we go to kindergartens for another two years. After that, we spend 6 years in primary schools. After primary schools, we go to secondary schools for 5years. Then, it is another 2 years in high schools. Then bachelor degree takes 3years to finish. In Malaysia, only the primary schools are compulsory. But pre-schools, primary schools and secondary school are free education. The government takes education very seriously.
H: Ah, it is very interesting. Next, how has your culture influenced your people/family values?
T: The culture definitely has a great influence on the family values. I think culture has a big influence on my family. In Malaysia, Family values are important. Our family is very big and we lived together. Unlike America, people become adult and become so independent. Now, my father and my mother are still lives with my grandparents. Actually, we consider living with families as a kind of happiness.
H: It is very similar to China. What is the weather like in your hometown?
T: Much better than the weather here. The weather in my hometown is very pleasant. As my hometown is close to the sea, the humidity is high. We just have one climate in my hometown. The average temperature is about between 26 and 30. We got a lot of rains.
H: Can you adapt to the weather here when you came here for the first time?
T: It is a long and hard time to adapt to the weather here. In winter, I don’t want to go out for one minute at all.
H: You have adapted to the weather here, righter?
T: Better, but I still hate the weather here.
H: I hate it too. In my home town, the weather in winter is not as cold as here. Next question is: what is the form of government in your country?
T: Federal constitutional monarchy and Federal parliamentary democracy.
H: Could you tell me more about that?
T: Sure. In Malaysia, we don’t have president, but we have Yang di-Pertuan Agong. I think Yang di-Pertuan Agong just like president in America. He is the head of the state of Malaysia. Then, we got prime minister and deputy prime minister. Prime minister is the head of the government of Malaysia. Prime minister is officially appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
H: The state of Malaysia and the government of Malaysia is not the same?
T: Yes. The prime minister and his cabinet should be collectively responsible to the parliament.
H: What is the most popular sport in your country?
T: I think it should be soccer. Badminton is also very popular in Malaysia.
H: What is a traditional food in your country?
H: Do you have any recommendations for visiting?
Malacca is very famous. It is the oldest city in Malaysia. Also the food in Malacca is famous.
H: Can you tell me something about the traditional food?
T: For Staple food, we have rice and noodles. We have lots of dishes to eat with the staple food.
H: Could you tell me a famous food in Malaysia?
T: Laksa. It is famous among Nyonya dishes.
H: Sorry, is the food in your country spicy?
T: Yes. We like cooking with pepper as spices.
H: Could you tell me what festivals you celebrate?
T: We have lot of festivals. The most important should be the "Hari Merdeka". It is our Independence Day. It is on August 31. We also have Labor Day, Maulidur Rasul, King’s birthday and so on.
H: How do you celebrate these holidays?
T: For some national festivals like "Hari Merdeka", we will have several days off and we usually go travelling with our families. For other festivals, we may have a family dinner together.
H: Tell me one thing that makes you proud of your country.
T: The food in Malaysia. Malaysia is known as Food Paradise.
Cates from different cultures mingle with each other. Chinese food,
Indian cuisine and Portugal food are also can be found easily in Malaysia.
H: How old are people in your country by the time they got married?
T: Uh, I think is between 25 and 30 years old.
H: Do you have any plan on it?
T: Not now, I need finish my study first. After I graduate from here, I think I will have a plan on it.
H: Best wishes. I think that all. I really appreciate your help. Thanks again.
T: You are welcome.
Preparation
Because of previous two interviews, I have been very interested in the culture in Malaysia. So I went to the Malaysia culture night. There, I met Ha Tiingteck. So he becomes my third interviewee. He is very nice to help me with my interview. Also, he paid lots of attention on my interview. When I have trouble in spelling in specific Malay words, he is so willing to help me with that. As usual, I printed those questions out. When doing the interview, I made some notes; at the same time, I recorded the whole interview. When I am doing the Transcript of the interview, these notes and record helped me a lot.
Personal review
I have done the entire three interviews. From these three interviews, I learned a lot. The first thing that I have learned should be the knowledge of Malaysia. Malaysia is beautiful and kind country. Malaysia is a multi-culture country. There are mainly three kinds of cultures in Malaysia: Malaysian culture, Chinese culture and Indian culture. I also see Malaysian’s warmth form the three interviewees.
The second thing I have learned is the interview skills. The preparation is very important. You should print the question out. And learn a little about the topic is very helpful for the interview. During the interview, you need to relax; nervous has side effects on your interview. Also taking notes or recording the entire interview help you with review the interview.
The third thing might be communication skills. Sometimes, visual images and body languages are much easier for people to understand. For example, we Jason is talking about the geography of Malaysia, I can’t understand very well. But after he showed me the picture, I got it immediately. While you have a communication with others, listening is also very important. Listening carefully makes you understand easier and focus on the communication. Listening is elegant art. It shows your respect to others.

Malaysia, located in Southeast Asia, a federal constitutional monarchy. It has thirteen states and three federal territories. Malaysia covers an area of 329,847 square kilometers, equals 127,350 square miles. Because of separated by the South China Sea, Malaysia has two main regions. One is Peninsular Malaysia and the other is Malaysian Borneo. Malaysia is bordered by Thailand, Indonesia, and Brunei on land. Also, Malaysia is bordered with Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines on Ocean. The capital city of Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur which is a famous tourism city.
Geography
Link
As I said, Malaysia has a land area of 329,847 square kilometers. With this, it is the 66th largest country in the world. In West Malaysia, there is a land border with Thailand. And in East Malaysia, there are land borders with Indonesia and Brunei. Also Malaysia links to Singapore with a narrow causeway. There are hundreds of islands around both of the two parts of Malaysia. The largest one is Labuan. Here is the picture of Labuan.
Biodiversity
Malaysia has a high number of species. About 20% of the world’s animal species are in Malaysia. There are about 210 mammal species in Malaysia. More than 620 species of birds are found in Malaysia. 250 reptile species have been recorded in Malaysia with about 150 species of snakes and 80 species of lizards. What is more? Around 600 coral species and 1200 fish species also have been recorded in Malaysia.

Link
Malaysia is also been considered as the heaven for plants. There are around 14,500 species of flowering plants and trees. There are almost 8,500 species of vascular plants in Peninsular Malaysia, with another 15,000 in the East. In the forest in East Malaysia, there are around 2,000 tree species. The largest flower in the world, Rafflesia genus, is also from Malaysia.

Climate
The climate of Malaysia is equatorial. From April to October, the climate affected by southwest monsoons; from October to February, the climate affected by northeast monsoons. As Malaysia is rounded by oceans, the temperature is not too high, between 26 to 30. The humidity is usually high. And it rains a lot in Malaysia; the average annual rainfall is around 250 centimeters. The climates of the Peninsula and the East are different. Because the climate of peninsula is affected by wind from mainland, and the climate of East is affected by wind from ocean. There are mainly three regions of climates in Malaysia, highland, lowland, and coastal.
Education
As Malaysia is a multi-culture country; Malayans, Chinese and Indians all have their own special culture, the education system in Malaysia is quite unique. There are three kinds of primary schools. The first kind schools are schools based on the Malay. The second kind schools are schools based on Chinese. And the last kind schools are based on light meters.
Wikipedia says: “The education system features a non-compulsory kindergarten education followed by six years of compulsory primary education, and five years of optional secondary education. Schools in the primary education system are divided into two categories: national primary schools and vernacular schools. Vernacular schools use either Chinese or Tamil as the medium of instruction, whereas national primary schools use Bahasa Malaysia as the medium of instruction for all subjects except English, Science and Mathematics. Before progressing to the secondary level of education, pupils in Year Six are required to sit for the Primary School Achievement Test."
Malaysia is a kind country. It keeps a positive relation between China. My country has economic and culture connections with Malaysia. Also, Malaysia is a wonderful place for visiting. From the two interviews, I think people in Malaysia are very kind and helpful.

H: Hi, I am Huan. I am from China. Nice to meet you. And thank you for helping me with the interview. Shall we start?
S: Nice to me too. Shall, you can start whenever you want.
H: Ok, first, what is your name? And can you spell it?
S: Sim Chenkeat. (He spelled it to me.)
H: Got it. Thank you. Where are you from?
S: I am from Malaysia.
H: Can you tell me more?
S: Oh, sure, I am from Sepang. It is in the southern part of the state of Selangor in Malaysia.
H: Ok, could you please tell me something about the education system of your country?
S: Ok, the Malaysia pays lots of attention on education. The government considers it as one of their responsibilities. Primary schools and secondary schools are free to public. And non-compulsory is a feature in the education system. Primary schools take 6 year to finish and secondary schools take 5years. Then, we go to high schools for 2 year. After the high schools, you can go to universities. By the way, it takes 3 year for undergraduate.
H: Ok, how has your culture influenced your people/family values?
S: I think culture has a big influence on my family. In the culture, men are always more social than women. Another example is when we are celebrating the holidays. At those times, each member of my family should attend. We have dinner together. Also, we will visit our relatives.
H: That is pretty like China, so what is the weather like in your hometown?
S: Not as cold as here. Actually, we don’t have winter in our hometown. The temperature doesn’t change a lot. And the average temperature is around 27. Another difference between my hometown’s weather and here’s is there is more rain in my home town.
H: So you like the weather here or your home town?
S: That must be my home town. It is too cold here in winter.
H: I have the same feeling. Let move to government, will this kind of questions ok fo you?
S; Yes, go ahead.

Preparation
To do the interview, I visited Jason again. With his help, I met Sim Chenkeat, my second Interviewee. Sim is a friend of Jason. They came here for study together.
Based On the experience of first present, I did some improvements. First, I have prepared all the questions I am going to ask, and printed them out for several copies. In this way, I don’t need to spend time on reflecting on what is the next question. Another improvement is to find a quiet place to do the interview. Last time, the place is not so quiet. And when I went back and check the recorder, there is lots of noise in the interview. Although, I have a recorder, I need to make some notes. It can help me to remember the details. With these improvements, the second interview went smoothly. And it becomes much easier when I do the transcript of the interview.
Personal Review
Sim Chenkeat is so nice. And the interview is a very wonderful time for both of us. He pays serious attention to my interview. His answers are good and more helpful. By the way, I don’t mean Jason’s answers are not good. Both Jason and Sim helped me a lot. I want to thank you Jason and Sim here.
After these two interviews, I have a rough image of Malaysia. Malaysia is a multi-cultural country. There are mainly Malayans, Chinese and Indians live in Malaysia. And Malaysia is a federal constitutional monarchy and Federal parliamentary democracy. This is the first time I have heard about it. Also, both Jason and Sim told me some interesting things, delicious food, and tourism cities in Malaysia. I think when I have time; I will go to Malaysia for visiting.
From the second interview, I still found some shortages. First, I am not good at note-taking. When I am taking notes, I can not pay attention to what Sim is saying. For the third interview, I need to learn some note-taking skills. Second, I am still a little shy to talk to someone I don’t know. In the interview, there are still some awkward situations. Even Sim is much outgoing than me. I need to be more outgoing when I do my third interview.
